In very simple terms, this means that I can benefit from the employment of my natural abilities (above a certain threshold deemed necessary for survival, and marked, say, by the point at which my earnings attract tax), only if certain others do also.

One important strand of argument in this book is that we must be constructivists about rights themselves. If we cannot appeal to natural law, neither can we be content with the assertion of rights as an axiom of political theory. If rights cannot be seen as given they must be made and the job of a constructivist political morality is to show them in the making. 6.
