610–657). The ability to conduct these tests in such a remote location likely enabled Aum members to learn things that would have been difficult to obtain from mere bench tests. Aum sought to produce chemical weapons in a quantity that would result in mass death. Batch processing entails scaling of chemical engineering processes and poses different challenges than benchlevel production experiments do. By analogy, cooking a recipe for two people is a different challenge from that of cooking the same recipe for a group of 50 people.

The case was postponed, giving Aum another example of how it could use violent methods in service of its cause. The fifth and final phase began with the trials of Aum leaders and key operatives and stretches to the present. Since 1995, the organization has diminished significantly in size and capability. Moreover, it has apologized to the victims of past Aum attacks, changed its name, and broken into at least two factions, one focused on peaceful spiritual activities and the other still devoted to Asahara.

What is clear, based on the available public record, is that Aum’s sarin attacks occurred after it conducted incidents involving biological agents that did not cause any casualties. Additionally, Aum’s sarin attacks occurred after the group had grown substantially in Russia and had synthesized sarin via a process that was unique to the Soviet arsenal of chemical agents. While Aum’s tremendous wealth enabled it to procure weaponry commonly associated with the militaries of states, the organization did not use its wealth to recruit foreign scientists to work in the weapons development programs or to obtain training 34 Aptitude for Destruction for some of its own scientists in foreign weapons labs.
